A Western Weekend in Bozeman, Montana

Bozeman, Montana, is a place that embraces its Western traditions, blending them with modern trends. Cattle ranching still frames the Gallatin Valley’s identity, and summer rodeos showcase bronc riders, barrel racers, and local pride. Evenings pulse with bluegrass jams and country swing dancers, twirling in well‑worn boots. Montana State University’s ag programs and student rodeo team keep the next generation rooted, while newcomers embrace farmers’ markets and Western art fairs. Together these threads weave a culture that stays rugged yet welcoming.

Here’s how you can spend a weekend experiencing the Western heritage of Bozeman.

Where to Stay

You'll find a plethora of hotels in Bozeman, ranging from national brands to locally owned boutique hotels, each with its own advantages. The newest Field and Stream Lodge Co., a sister company to the magazine, offers newly remodeled accommodations with a rustic, cabin feel. Relax by the large stone fireplace in The Great Room or tell stories around the canoe-shaped firepits. This pet-friendly hotel also offers connecting suites with bunk rooms, perfect for families traveling together.

If you want to immerse yourself, consider an all-inclusive stay at one of the nearby guest ranches. Nine Quarter Circle, Mountain Sky Guest Ranch, Lone Mountain Ranch, and the 320 Guest Ranch all offer horseback riding, fly-fishing, hiking and delicious meals — some even have chuckwagon dinners or evening wagon rides to fine dining!

These ranches host an array of activities for the duration of the stay, but for those who prefer to explore on their own, here’s an itinerary for weekend in Bozeman.

Thursday
Western History + Rodeos

If you arrive during the day, start at the Gallatin History Museum. Located in the old county jail built in 1911, the museum still has the hanging gallows from days gone by. You'll also learn about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the formation of Bozeman, and life in the area. The museum houses a photo collection of over 20,000 historic images.

If you're visiting during the summer months, catch the Valley View Rodeo. Bozeman's newest rodeo series takes place most Thursdays, featuring exciting competitions, food trucks and a full bar. Watch the schedule for live entertainment following some performances! The Bozeman Stampede also takes place in August each year and runs for three consecutive days.

Friday
Boots, Buckles, and Western Art

After breakfast at the Western Café, start your adventure by gearing up. Need cowboy boots? Lucchese Bootmaker has a storefront on Main Street, featuring some of the finest boots available. For over 140 years, this bootmaker has built a legacy in using skill and intention to craft highly sought-after boots.

Also on Main Street, you'll find a brand store for Montana Silversmiths, one of the premier makers of silver jewelry, belt buckles, and accessories in the west. (Fun fact, they make the trophy buckles for the National Finals Rodeo each year!)

Western art lovers will want to stop by Old Main Gallery and Framing. Established in 1964, it's been a fixture in downtown Bozeman, cultivating a diverse collection while maintaining a Western emphasis. Montana Trails Gallery, another long-time Bozeman favorite, showcases work by emerging Montana artists, regional favorites, and rare pieces by renowned artists such as Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington.

Wind down with dinner at Ted's Montana Grill, whose menu emphasizes bison. If you haven't tried it, it's a nutrient-rich, lean, and tender meat that's mildly sweeter than beef.

Saturday
Horseback Riding + Country Swing

Horseback riding is one of the best ways to see the area, particularly the high country, where you can cover much more territory than you can on foot. Jake's Horses, located in Gallatin Canyon outside of Big Sky, can take any level of rider, and even offers rides in the winter! Schedule rides from one hour to a full day, and your whole group can ride together.

Allow yourself enough time to relax before an evening out. If time permits, a soak in Bozeman Hot Springs is great for sore muscles! Make your reservations at Bourbon, where you can get authentic barbecue, an extensive whiskey selection, and Montana hospitality. Following dinner, stay for line dancing lessons by Western Roots Country Dancing, followed by dancing the rest of the evening!

Sunday
Grizzly Bears + Gifts

There's still time for a couple of experiences before leaving. Start with breakfast at Main Street Overeasy. This little diner serves breakfast all day, featuring a variety of Mexican dishes, classic Benedicts, omelets, scrambles, and, while they last, amazing cinnamon rolls.

Montana Grizzly Encounter, located just outside town on Bozeman Hill, is a grizzly bear rescue and education sanctuary where guests can see grizzlies that are unable to survive on their own in the wild. Observe them up close while learning about these amazing animals, their behaviors, and their habitat.
